IT bands suck

I haven't been following my training *exactly* for this half marathon I'm doing in 6 1/2 weeks. 2 weeks ago (basically, the first few days of the training plan) My IT band was on FIRE. Like, it would throb all day long and felt like knives were stabbing into it while I ran. So I've been easing back on the speed paces and biking whenever possible instead of running for the last 2 weeks.


I went out to do my 7 mile run this morning, and I was a little nervous. While my knee has slowly been getting better the last couple weeks, it's always a nagging feeling that I try to ignore and hope it goes away. I didn't feel it at ALL today! YAY! No pain at all in my knee? What a great day.

Back into training!

Mornings are Satan

I did seven 800's this morning for my workout. I usually do 4 or 5 because...well...I don't know why. Anyway, my training plan had me down for 7 so that's what I was going to do. I knew I needed anywhere from an hour to and hour twenty minutes to get this done, so I had to get up early. When my alarm went off at 5:30am I hated everyone.

I went out the door thinking I would just do the warm up and if I wasn't feeling it then I wouldn't do the 800's and just jog the whole thing straight. I kind of woke up and decided to go for it. It was cooler this morning (66!!) and I had some good music and while it was hard, I didn't feel like I was running so fast that I was out of control. (that happens to me at about a 7:30 pace, just too fast for me)

I finish up my run feeling great that I did all seven 800's without quitting and headed home to check the results. Fastest was a 3:50 which I am thrilled about!

And then I entered in that number into the McMillan calculator to see how I was shaping up for my goal. With that time for an 800, my 5K time should be a 29:30!! I can already do 27 minutes so that means my 800 time is WAY too slow. For my 25 minute 5K goal, I need to be doing an 800 in 3:14!

And then my dreams were crushed.

Don't worry, I'm not giving up. I'm just going to work harder! Or something.

I'm basically awesome

Everyone says that speed is relative. And it's true. I don't consider myself "fast" because I can't run 8 minute miles consecutively. (5K or longer) So, what is fast for me is probably an easy day for someone else.

This morning I had a 4 mile tempo run which was supposed to be around 9:10-9:25 pace. I was hoping for 9:20's since it's still so hot and humid here and that slows me down drastically. So I slogged through my warm up and started going. Kind of felt like this,

But I was trying to stay comfortable while knowing I was using some muscles.

I tried to settle down and make sure I wasn't pushing it too hard. Mile 2 @ 8:42

What the crap is going on??

I've come to a new realization about myself.

The Solution for Crankiness

It's amazing how different I feel when I exercise.

All day today (I have not exercised yet) I've felt sluggish and tired and annoyed.

After a lunch out with some ladies at church, I put a movie on for my boys and went to lay down for a nap.

Then I woke up and was more groggy and annoyed.

My bike ride I wanted to do at some point today kept running through my head and finally at 5:55pm I threw those boys into the bike trailer and went out. It rained on us. I had to stop a lot because of cars and crossing the street. But I felt GREAT when I was done. awake, in a good mood, ready to tackle anything!


Exercise is good.

The summer really gives me a hard time. Dave works four 10 hour work days so he leaves the house at about 6:20 in the morning. Meaning I need to LEAVE the house by 5 or 5:15 to finish my run in time before he leaves. But the kids don't have to be anywhere so they sleep in.

This week Dave has gone back to a regular 5 day work week and so now leaves the house at 7:25 or so. YAY! But I'm SO tired that getting up at 5:50 is still really hard. I get up and feel like I'm drugged and barely slog through my mile warm up before I wake up. When I'm done, i take a shower, climb back in bed and fall asleep again.

I'm hoping when school starts that having a regular schedule will knock me back into a normal schedule. It will, right?

July review

July recap (a little behind schedule?)

go the whole year injury free!!! I'm having a slight nagging IT band annoyance. It seems to be triggered by more biking, so I'm trying to spin easy and not have the gear so hard.

1 mile timed run each month 
January outside- 8:05
February treadmill - 7:35 <-- almost="" died="" span="">
March - ummm, oops.

April - yeah.

May - In my defense, I was out of town for 3 of the 4 weeks in May.
June - too dang hot. seriously, the second I walk out the door I'm covered with sweat.
July - ummm, I did some mile repeats at 8:15, so there's that.

Run/bike/swim 2000 miles combined
Run - 78.86
Bike - 168.37
total for July - 247.67 (not too bad!)
Total miles - 984.78 (That leaves me a little over 1000 miles to go with only 5 months. Hmmmm....

Run a sub 2 hour half marathon.Registered, official training started today!

run a sub 25 minute 5KJune race - fail. Next is sometime in October

bike a 15 mile bike ride averaging 19 mph. not yet.

race a 10K under 58 minutesneed to find one, for some reason there are not very many around here.

weight training at least 2x a week.  doing pretty good.

maybe try a duathlon? not going to happen this year. oh well.

Rain and training

So I'm running along this last week minding my own business, mile 2 of my 3 mile easy run, and BAM.

The skies opened up and I got SOAKED. I had my iPhone with me for my music and I tried desperately to try and figure out where to put it so it didn't get ruined. I shoved it up my sports bra and had to move it to the BACK of my sports bra because the front and sides were drenched. Fortunately, it survived and so did i. 

My triathlon I was going to do got pulled so it is no longer being put on - so no triathlon for me. Good news? official half marathon training starts tomorrow! 5x800's in the AM. Looking forward to being a slave to the training.
