splish splash

Since I now have a triathlon on the schedule, I need to get back in the pool. So yesterday morning, off I went!


My shoulders began burning SO quickly, it's a good thing I'm starting back into it now! Did an easy 15 minute continuous swim and completely zoned out. Felt good. Next week I've got another continuous swim and some intervals, it's fun to get a workout and not pound my legs at all. Man I love swimming.

Getting runner's legs in the heat

I asked Dave if I had runner's legs yet. He said I was getting there and mentioned that I'm not running as much as I think I am. WHAT!? (let's just say he's been regretting that statement for the last 2 days)

To prove him wrong - cuz that's what I do when someone says something like that - I decided to run 8 miles today. Have I run 8 miles yet in 2013? nope.

Did I mention that it was 80 degrees and 90% humidity? at 6am?

I wanted to die. I was barely shuffling along feeling like I was going to die. I was easily a minute per mile slower than I would normally run. I ran out of water, I got chills and goosebumps, I was nauseas for hours afterwards. Guess what I learned about those symptoms later after consulting Dr. Google? They are symptoms of heat exhaustion! Real genius, I'm obviously blond.

What did I learn?

Don't try to kill yourself proving your husband wrong. Also, I need to move.

Faster than a speeding bullet

As I was searching for some 5K's to do, I found a NEW triathlon only about 45 minutes away from where I am (here? that's a miracle). It's a sprint so not any more training than I'm already doing (except adding in some swimming). I mentioned it to Dave and he okayed it!!! woohoo! So I'm bagging the 5K I was thinking about on September 21, and instead...

I'm doing a sprint triathlon on September 28th! yay!

Now about that swimming thing...

September 21 is the day of pain

My finger is hovering over the "Register now" button on my next 5K. It's in late September which could potentially still be really hot = me hating life at about mile 2.

I get so excited about signing up for a 5K because I'm all, I will do awesome! I can run 8 minute miles! (even though I've never run them consistently in mile repeats) It's only 3 miles! I'll do so good!

And then reality hits in the middle of the race and the intense pain begins. Why do I always do this to myself? I guess I love the pain.

Sub 2 - I think I can I think I can

I did it. I registered for my second ever half marathon!



It's on October something. 19th? 17th? Anyway, it's somewhere in the teens and I already have my training plan picked out and it "officially" begins August 12th and the long run for that week is 8 miles. SO, as long as I can stay consistent at doing 7 or 8 miles once a week I should be good as far as that goes. My training is running 4 days a week with 2 days of biking for a cross train.

Here are the first 4 weeks of my 10 week plan:


I'm a mixed ball of excited/nervous/scared/dreading. I'm using the Run Less Run Faster book for my training paces at those intervals and my goal race time (which is anything with a 1 in front of it).

I'm excited to have such a specific goal that I think I can do.
I'm nervous because I am always nervous before a race.
I'm scared thinking that I'm getting in over my head.
I'm dreading the first month or so of training in the heat.

9:09 per mile or faster - I can DO it!!!

June details



go the whole year injury free!!! no problemo so far.

1 mile timed run each month 
January outside- 8:05
February treadmill - 7:35 <-- almost="" died="" span="">
March - ummm, oops.

April - yeah.

May - In my defense, I was out of town for 3 of the 4 weeks in May.
June - too dang hot. seriously, the second I walk out the door I'm covered with sweat.

Run/bike/swim 2000 miles combined
Run - 63.81
Bike - 112
total for June - 175.81
Total miles - 737.11 for the year. I have a solid 6 months left and some longer races to train for, so I know I can at least hit 1500 for the year. we'll see.

Run a sub 2 hour half marathon.Registered today, 110 days to go.

run a sub 25 minute 5KJune race - fail. Next one is September 21.

bike a 15 mile bike ride averaging 19 mph. about that...

race a 10K under 58 minutesneed to find one, for some reason there are not very many around here.

weight training at least 2x a week.  trying to stay consistent.

maybe try a duathlonprobably not going to happen this year.

Since Dave does a 4 day work week in the summer, my fridays are now open for a longer bike ride, I'm trying to do 25 miles on fridays. PLUS, a great friend offered to take all 4 of my kids to burger king for lunch on Mondays and they are gone for at LEAST 2 hours, so there's a 30 mile bike ride on Mondays. So July is looking good for the next couple weeks on the biking.

Honestly, I'm just trying to keep my motivation up when the heat and humidity is making me not want to do any running of any sort. I feel miserable. My pace sucks, my tummy is upset all the time, and now that I've seen 6 bears the last week while running and biking, I'm terrified that I'm going to get attacked. Summer running is not for me.
