and so it begins.

Next week "officially" begins marathon training for my November marathon.

The past several months have been a period of getting back in shape after the baby, prepping for my september triathlon, and getting some base training for the first week (next week) in which the long run is 10 miles. I seem to get injured easily and wanted to make sure I was really prepped for this.

I'm a little nervous. in this first 4 weeks of the training plan takes me from 10 miles to 14 miles.

14 miles. I've NEVER run 14 miles and yet it's still a long 12.2 miles away from the finish line when I actually do the race!

the silence

This morning after my run and the 20 minutes it took me to do the "Ab Challenge",  I made sure the kids were all settled and got in the shower - a complete necessity when the sweat doesn't stop dripping from your face and arms until 45 minutes after your run. After the usual soaping and rinsing I did one of my favorite things ever. I sat down and let the hot pelting water just hit me in the face and shoulders and let the water massage me.  I lost track of how long I sat there enjoying the silence and my alone time. No one was asking me for anything, no one needed me at that particular minute, and it was all about me.

It made me start thinking about why I run. Why I like to bike for 2 hours by myself.  Why I LOVE to swim where not even music can follow me. There are many reasons, but one of the big ones is the quiet.  It is one of the very few times during the day that there is silence, and the only person asking anything of me is me. The time is mine and I cherish it. It rejuvenates me, wakes me up, allows me to appreciate all that I have and makes me feel alive.

Long live the run, the bike, the swim, the shower, or whatever it is that makes me/you/us feel alive. Enjoy it, relish in it, soak it all in.

And then we might have just a little more to give to everything and everyone else.

Summer is for Abs

So if you know me at all, you know I love a challenge. And while I'm a couple days late, I'm joining in with the 30 day abs challenge @ Run to the Finish.

I'm working day 2 right now (although I know it's day 3 ::technically::) and I am ashamed. I haven't done any ab work at ALL the last month. I'm weeeeaaaakkkkkk. 

I get back from my run in the morning and then it's hectic make lunches, breakfast, do the dishes, start the laundry, etc. I barely have time for ME to eat breakfast, let alone stretch, ice, and add on some extra muscle group work! I mean, HELLO!!!! I have four kids here. One of them is 3 years old (should there be any other explanation here??), and a 5 month old baby! Okay, enough complaining. I decided that this challenge is right up my alley. And it's a little difficult. which I LOVE.

1/2 way there

2012 Goals review!
  • Run a 5K under 27:30 (8:50 pace) 27:21 June 23, Ignite 5K
  • Have a baby. (hahaha) He's almost 6 months old and I'm so glad he snuck his way into our family.
  • Get down to my "happy weight"at 122 pounds.Weighed in at 124.2 on Saturday. I'm starting to plateau on the weight front, but my body is still changing, so I'm happy. 2.2 pounds to go!
  • Biking speed averaging 18 mph. 17 mph so far.
  • Do an olympic distance triathlon. no time goal although I would LIKE to break 3 hours. registered and nervous!
  • Complete my marathon in under 4:30. This one may need to change a little since I'm doing this marathon with my dad. He has hurt his calf or something so he's cross training and I'm hoping he heals fast.
  • Find another 10K and break 58 minutes.
  • Run 800 700 miles for the year.  Ran 72.46 miles in June. 323.86 miles total for 2012. I think one more week or so and I'll be ready to retire my shoes.
Is it just me or does 2012 seem to be flying by? I can't believe it's July already! I'm going to blink and school will be starting in the fall again.
