Favorite Things Friday!

With a little inspiration from Beth over at Shutupandrun, here are some of my "favorite things".

- Shoes. I LOVE shoes. All different kinds for every occasion. You can NEVER have too many shoes.

(I totally need these)

- Cookies. I LOVE cookies. Of all the desserts and candy, I pick cookies. Homemade ones of the non-sugar variety, please. (Don't even mention oreos. Sacrilege of a cookie) I have the BEST chocolate chip cookie recipe ever. I know everyone says that, but I really do. I mean, really.

- Pink lady apples.
I may or may not have purchased 8.47 pounds of them today at Albertson's. Since they were .99/lb. Is that wrong?

- The Chronicles of Narnia. (Not the movies) These are some of my favorite books ever. I've read them over and over again. C.S. Lewis is a genius and the books are so much fun. If you've never read all of the books, go and do it. (especially if you are a Christian - there is symbolism everywhere)

- Swimming. As hard as I try to be a fast runner (or cyclist), I am just good at swimming. I love the water and I really enjoy beating other people at SOMETHING. I spent years and years working on technique and speed since I started competitively swimming at 10 years old. And now I don't have to put forth much effort and I'm still better than most. It feels so good. AND it goes to show that a lot of hard work can have lasting benefits years later. (for all those that ran track in high school - you are kicking my trash today on the road!)

What are your favorite things??

It's time

I pulled open the web page yesterday for the marathon I've been eyeing to do with my dad this fall.

And guess what I found right on the home page??

Registration is OPEN.

My credit card rolls over on Saturday to a new billing cycle.

I'm gonna be all over that. (before I chicken out)

First marathon ever, people!

I love swimming!!

And I teach swim lessons during the summer.

And I am planning on doing a sailing trip in June of 2012.

So I bought some new swimsuits! (not for racing)

AND they were on clearance since they are last year's designs.

The back.

#2 and the back looks the same as the first.

Can't wait for the outdoor pools to open!!

going down, down, down...

Today I weighed in at 125.8 pounds.

Way better than the 128.5 I was at last week.

Candy is yummy.

I ran 6 miles this morning. Go me! I got faster with every mile and felt pretty strong.

Mile 1 - 9:59
Mile 2 - 9:51
Mile 3 - 9:28
Mile 4 - 10:01 - okay, this one isn't faster but I was running into the wind and this mile had the "C" hill.
Mile 5 - 9:36 (still into the wind)
Mile 6 - 8:56 - HAHA!! I hit the 8's!!

overall pace - 9:37

Why is it SO HARD to run faster? On the last 2 miles, my heart rate was hitting 185-187. That's pretty much my MAX, not even the 80% or so where we are supposed to hang out. It blows my mind that some runners out there (skinnyrunner, hungryrunnergirl, EMZ) can run like, 7-ish minute miles for a MARATHON! My fastest ONE MILE was 7:50 and my heart rate hit 192 and I thought I was going to puke, fall over, and pass out. Is there something wrong with me??

I know!! I challenge all three of them to a swimming race!! YEAH! That's probably the only way I'll ever beat them in anything.

Since I had such a great run (for me) this morning, I think I finally figured out why! I had great carb loading last night with all the peanut butter M&M's and starburst jelly beans I ate. (seriously. I ate a lot.) I had a tummy ache from all the candy as I went to sleep but I had tons of energy in the morning!

Screw clean eating! Bring on the easter baskets!!

Official Results!

I placed second female overall (the girl that beat me KILLED me in the run.), and 7th including the guys!

Here's how it broke down:

Swim - 2nd place overall (1st female)
Bike - 5th place overall (1st female)
Run - 16th place overall (4th female)

Here's what I considered while reflecting on this race - this is the first time I've done all 3 events in one day since September. I have been working my BOOTY off this winter trying to become a better runner. Seriously, I ran a half marathon and a 10K, tried barefoot running, got a garmin, and then jumped into a triathlon with no swimming for 7 months and got SECOND?! And you know what? I loved the swimming portion. I loved the biking portion. And I struggled through the running portion. When doing all three at once I realized that I am just BETTER at the other 2 sports. Like, naturally better. I don't think running will ever be my strength.

I could never give up triathlons. I am a swimmer first.

Can't wait until the next one. Any donations for my tri bike that I got fitted for??

Lifetime Fitness Indoor Triathlon Recap

Pre-race - got up at 6am after not sleeping great for some reason. Don't know why, just didn't feel rested. Ate some pancakes with syrup and water (awesome pre-race carb loading!) Got the kids up and dropped off at the babysitters at 7am. Got to Lifetime at 7:30 for my 8am wave start.

(trying to decide which goggles and which cap. Can you tell I'm a swimmer?)

SWIM 10 minutes: Started strong with flip turns and everything. (Keep in mind I haven't been in a pool since September. That's 7 months of ZERO swimming.) Started to get a little tired at 200 yards and dropped the flip turns. Triceps felt amazingly good but the shoulders and forearms got a little fatigued by the end. Finished strong at 24 lengths of the pool (600 yards). One guy beat me at 26 lengths.

T1: 10 minutes until the bike start so I changed out of my suit and put on running shorts and sports bra and top. filled my water bottle, pulled my hair back, adjusted my spin bike, and sat down. We had a late start so it was really 15 minutes here.

BIKE 30 minutes: I kept my resistance low and spun as fast as I could. I kept the speed around 32-33 mph (those spin bikes are way off) and finished at 15.6 miles. Heart rate was really low, this part felt pretty easy. One girl got like, 20 miles! What in the world??

T2: Walked over to the treadmills, grabbed a towel, started up my mp3 player and off we went!

RUN 20 minutes: I started off at 6.5 speed with the plan to up it .2 every song. My goal was to go at least 2.2 miles total. I felt good until about 10 minutes in, I got really hot and my legs were feeling tired. I made it up to 7.1 but had to lower it back down to 6.7 because I didn't think I could hold it for 8 more minutes. Finished at 6.9 with 2.24 miles total. (that's 8:55 pace!!) I'm pretty happy with that!

I won't know my results until monday when they post them on the internet, but I think I did pretty good. The shirt is REALLY big, and I got a small! But it's really nice fabric and has a cool logo on it. Also got a swim cap and some muscle milk at the end.

Totally fun.

I love pizza.

I weighed 128 pounds yesterday. Ummm, I need to lose 8 pounds. Darn it.

I have a triathlon tomorrow and haven't swam since September of last year. Oops.

I very rarely floss my teeth and the dentist told me yesterday that my gums look AWESOME. Boo-yah.

I let my older son watch a movie so I can take a nap in the middle of the day.

My hair is in a ponytail 6 out of 7 days a week.

I'm trying to figure out a way to convince my husband to let me race a half marathon 6 weeks before my FULL marathon. We are a one income family with 3 kids. Not a lot of extra cash! Anyone want to donate $50 for the race entry??

I feel naked without my eye makeup on.

I love to shop but I do the budget and pay the bills. Guilt trumps shopping.

I love my oldest child the most because she's my only girl.

I love my middle child the most because he is the sweetest.

I love my youngest child the most because he is the funniest.

6 days to go...

My FIRST triathlon of 2011 is in 6 days!!  (If I'm doing my math right, that would be Saturday) It's one of the Lifetime Fitness Indoor Triathlon Series. I had a dream about it last night. That I put my goggles on for the swim and injured one of my eyes. Yes, something on one of my eyes and it was bleeding and couldn't finish the race. Can I tell you how glad I was when I woke up and realized it wasn't true?!

It's a sprint race - so it's short - but I still want to rest this week so I'll be tip top shape on Saturday. Easy run today, easy run wednesday. A short bike tomorrow, some stretching on thursday, and that's IT for the week!

I would still like to do one more triathlon for the season bringing me up to 3, so let me see if I can talk my spouse into letting me sign up for one more. I'd LOVE to throw an Olympic distance in there in September, but since I'm doing a marathon this year, I'm not sure I can talk him into that. Okay, Olympic distance for 2012!

I LOVE racing!

Favorite Things Friday!

  • My two sons. Even though they jump on me and knee me in the head. Even though they pull out all the toys and make a disaster in the living room after I just spent 2 hours cleaning and organizing the toy room and living room. Even though they drop food all over the kitchen floor. They are just too cute.

  • Spring time in Texas. Even though the humidity will make me vomit while I run outside. Even though the heat makes me sweat so much my husband will not kiss me good-bye in the morning. (true story) Even though I get so much sun that I will have skin cancer at 35. Because look at the beautiful flowers.

  • Easter. Not because of the candy (please, like I need BIGGER thighs?), but because of the time I have to reflect on my Savior.

  • Being healthy enough to exercise. Yeah, I get little injuries here and there, but I can go to the grocery store without worrying that I might catch a cold that will kill me. (Like my good friend's daughter.) Grateful that I could run my 7 miles this morning. It may not have been fast or anything but I'm not in a wheelchair like a teenage boy at my church. SO much to be grateful for today.
What are YOU grateful for??

This is clean eating at it's finest!! That's a full size dinner plate and loaded with 3 different greens, broccoli, tomato, bell pepper, hard boiled egg, cheese, and grilled chicken!

I ate every bite.

And then got ready for my first run in 8 days.

Strike a pose.

Waited for Teresa to get to my house, and I caught her as she ran around the corner!!

We did 4 miles together so I could test the waters out.
I'm right behind her going up the biggest hill on our route, it's almost 3/4 mile long on a busy road.

Legs felt really strong on the run. ZERO shin pain, my neck didn't hurt, my knees were quiet.

We finished with a 9:11 pace overall (holy crap!). It's always fun to go with a buddy and chat some of the time away.

If I had 100 sandwiches I'd eat them all at once!

There are many things that make me happy.

One of those is when my husband goes to Sprouts for me(since he works across the street), and brings home lots of beautiful, delicious veggies.

I should probably own a broccoli farm. My family can down 2.5 lbs. of broccoli in one meal. Ditto green beans.

Another item that makes me insanely happy is a yummy sandwich. In my house, the sandwich is king. Some meat, some cheese, lots of tomatoes, MIRACLE WHIP (not mayo), loaded up with spinach or lettuce, some black pepper, and you HAVE to have toasted bread. It's a must. To not toast the bread is, I'm not good at analogies, but let's just say it's not right.

I got it! Not toasting the bread is like calling an oreo a "cookie". HA! What sacrilege!

(email me if you also want to know how to look like a toolbag. I obviously have that down.)

I've taken 8 full days off from running.

I had a stellar week of biking and yoga, which I will now call boga. I even made one of my 2011 goals by averaging 17 mph on my bike ride. (It's hilly) I'm upping the ante on that one to 17.5mph! (eventually I'd love to hold 20mph, but let's take baby steps here.)

I will run 4-ish miles tomorrow and see how everything feels.

Race in 2 weeks!!
