Cleat that!

My hubs got them for me for Christmas. Today was the PERFECT day to use them. When I started my ride it was 50 degrees and sunny. And then when I picked up the fam for a group ride, I took them off since it was then 70 degrees!

Since I've decided that fast is what I want to be, I am going shorter and harder. Here were my splits for the 12 mile ride today.

Yeah, there are some MONSTERS in that ride. Which I'm hoping is why my overall average was 16.3mph. Even without clip-ins.

I have GOT to get me some cleats. Anyone want to donate to the cleat fund? (I think they are $20)

eyeball sweat

Today's workout = nada.

I made today a rest day in preparation for my run tomorrow morning. That's right. I am RUNNING tomorrow morning. I'm hoping my hip and knee hang in there. I'm thinking 4-5 miles or so.

The other night I had a ROCKING session on the trainer. The time flew by while I saw this view for 55 minutes...

I did twenty 30 second standing sprints, and ten 20 second seated sprints. with some 5 minute sessions of counting to make sure I was in the 90 rpm range.

And in true Hungry Runner Girl fashion, I sweated in my eyeballs.


And it was awesome.

The husband has agreed to my first triathlon of the season. I'm going to do the Lifetime Indoor Triathlon!! Woohoo! It's on April 16th (one of the FEW that are on a Saturday), and you get to PICK your start time. yay!

It's a 10 minute swim (do as many laps as you can), 10 minutes to change and head to the spin bikes. 30 minutes on the spin bikes (as many miles as you can), 5 minutes to head to treadmills. 20 Minutes on the treadmill to go as far as you can. They give you points based on how far you go and then tally the points to determine placing.

I'm going to hit up the treadmill once a week to bust out 20 minutes and see how far I can go.

Here's hoping I get sweat in my eyeballs.

You look funnier than you think

I don't know why almost all race photos look so bad. I mean, they are professional photographers, right? But for some reason I look like a tool in my race photos.

I don't know why I am looking down in most of these, I usually don't look down when I run. weird.


Nice, I covered my face up on this one. HAHA! Is my mouth open wide enough?? Jeez!


So here's what's up this week, I hurt myself. Again. I talked about it last week, my hip hurting really bad? Remember? Well, I think I pulled some adductor muscles or something, all the muscles in that hip are REALLY tight. So I am taking most of this week off from running. I may try a short jog on friday.  Today I did one of the insanity videos which I think hold my heart rate up pretty good and mimics running motions without the impact. I think tomorrow I will hook up the trainer for a short 45 minute ride. 

I am going to try and focus on shorter periods of time but going FASTER.  Shorter runs but faster runs. speedwork. back to 10-15 miles biking but doing them faster.  I'm thinking I might bust out my P90X videos twice a week or so to do some strength training.

No races looming so I'm not feeling super motivated.

Uh Oh.

Should I give the good news first or the bad news first?

Good news:

my 4.8 mile run last night ROCKED. My heart rate was the lowest it's been for a while. My max only hit 182(it's usually 191), and I hung out in the 177 range for most of the run (usually 186)!! woohoo! AND it was one of the fastest I've run that's not a race. Averaged about 9:30 miles for the whole thing. And there are some monster hills in that route!! (at least 4)

Bad news:

My hips hurts. Bad. I actually voiced the word, "OW" while I was running. Several times. It's the same hip and pain that took me out of running a year ago for 3 months. I haven't felt a twinge at all for the last 8 months from that hip and now? It's throbbing just sitting in this chair as I type. Every step I take is painful. In the joint. I'm hoping that because I ran in a lot of bumpy grass last night to avoid cars is what tweaked it and it will get better in a couple days.

Why am I so prone to injury? It's like I'm falling apart at the seams, and I'm not even 30 yet!

NO SCHOOL!! That means everyone in the house sleeps in and I can ride my bike OUTSIDE during the day since Dave is home!! 24 mile bike ride is on tap.

Tuesday
Running day. I'm thinking some fartlek fun for 5-ish miles.

Wednesday
Trainer day. 1 hour. Or so. (insanity video??)

Thursday
Running day. Two 1 mile repeats. Ouch.

Friday
running day. 7 miles easy-ish

Saturday
30 mile bike outside.

Hot Chocolate 10K

I didn't do as well as I wanted to at the race, but I am still proud of how I did - this being my first 10K EVER.

And, because I am a freak with the numbers, here they are:

Mile 1 - 8:31 (heart rate - 178)
Mile 2 - 8:54 (heart rate - 187)
Mile 3 - 9:45 (HR 187)
Mile 4 - 9:52 (HR 184)
Mile 5 - 9:29 (HR 182)
Mile 6 - 9:56 (HR 184)
Mile .2 - 2:02 ( HR 186)

Fastest speed - 7:27
Max heart rate - 192

I actually calculated 6.25 miles.

Thoughts
- Mile 1 - WHAT!?!? I can't be-LIEVE I went that fast in a race for an entire mile. I felt really great that mile.
- Mile 2 - still very quick and feeling GREAT. That speed work is paying off!
- And then I faded. It could have been the massive hill. Or the fact that the longest amount of speedwork was 1.5 miles.

All finished and sweaty!


Teresa placed 3rd with a screaming time of 51:20!!!!

Final time for me: 58:42. 18th in AG. (avg 9:23 pace)

More speedwork = faster me!! On to the next race!

Houston,

We have a problem.

Tomorrow morning when my race starts it is supposed to be 38 degrees.

What.
The.
Crap.

How am I supposed to wear my totally cute running skirt when it's 38 degrees??!!

Now I don't know what I should wear. Capri tights? Full on pants? Base layer and a jacket? Base layer and a running long sleeved top? Beanie? ear warmers? ARM warmers??

The gloves are a positive!

And where do I put my number if I wear a jacket and take it off? racing belt? Wear it on the thigh?

HELP ME!

I am cold blooded.

Confession: I've been doing really bad at my no sweets until the weekend thing. I'm giving myself a cheat day every week and I am not doing well. Last week was my 4 year old's birthday. we had 2 parties. which means two sets of cake and ice cream where no one judges you. Then we had company last night. And I had to make ANOTHER birthday cake for a coworker of my hubs. With candy all over it. (why does the wife get stuck with all that stuff?)

It's okay!

We all get a do-over EVERY SINGLE DAY. Today is my do-over. I am newly inspired because I got a DEAL on my favorite cereal/snack/dessert item. (.99/box!!) (I may have bought 12 boxes.) (and I might be considering buying another 12)


Kashi GoLean Crunch. 
It is the best cereal out there. I'm obsessed with crunchy food so this hits the bill.
Mixed with fat free plain yogurt and topped with some fruit? Heaven.

Warning: Topic Change

So it's really cold outside. I live in Texas, so our normal temps during the winter are low 40's at night and mid 50's or even low 60's during the day. Call me a wuss if you want but during the summer I train in 108 degree heat with a bazilllion percent humidity. 

I.
Hate.
The.
Cold.

It's not normal for weather to be this frigid!

This was supposed to be my taper week. But I had no workout on Saturday (see below), Sunday is rest day, and I was too cold on Monday, so I did nothing.

It's going well, right?

So yesterday I pulled out my Biggest Loser cardio max video. I haven't done it in like, a year or something. And it's easy now. totally easy. biking has made my quads like rocks. The lunges didn't even phase me. However. My butt is sore today. Didn't see that one coming.

It's still too cold outside to run (at 20 degrees currently), so I pulled out the trainer.

Which my boys thought was the coolest thing ever.


During nap time I got a GREAT 35 minute sprints workout in.

And then made sure to take my vitamins.


Saturday bike ride = Bust.

I went with my mom to the Plano Cycling Club to join the "step-up" ride. they go 32 miles at about 14.5 mph. My mom enjoys riding and isn't there to race, and I wanted to stay with her. We got there (31 degrees. COLD.) at 8am ready to go only to be told that the group we wanted to go with wasn't starting until 10am. This place is about 35 minutes away from my house. We didn't want to go all the way back home and then all the way back so we joined another group. The "Tweener" group. they go 40 miles at 15.5-16.5 mph. 3 miles into the ride the leader told us that we were too slow and couldn't stay. (I could have stayed but I wanted to hang with the parental unit)

To poop? Or not to poop? That is the question.

Before my 8 mile run today I made sure to go to the bathroom. Got all ready, my mom was watching my boys play in the bath, it was a beautiful sunny 46 degrees and warming up every minute.

And then I got a rumbling feeling in my gut. And I thought about my chances of making it 4 miles to the closest bathroom on my route or if I should hit up the toilet again. Another rumble made my decision and am I glad that's what I chose!!

All cleaned out and ready to go!


And then had tummy issues the rest of the day. Does anyone else get potty problems after they run more than 5 miles? My husband says I'm not normal.

On to another body part...

Too bad I can't use them on the 32 mile ride tomorrow. I don't have cleats yet. Lame.

Jumbled thoughts

My mom is here right now, which means that I don't have to wake up at the unGodly hour of 5am to get my run in with 28 degree weather. (go ahead, make fun of the Texans who are wimps)

I get to sleep in until 6:45am! (got to get my daughter to school) and then for a leisurely run at 8am in the blazing sun with 38 degree weather - much better! Nice and easy today. For some reason I am really tired. muscles are tired. brain is tired. don't want to work out.  Weird.

I've decided that homemade apple pie is the perfect recovery food after a run. Don't you think? (so much for no sweets until Saturday. I'm weak.)

I've got 8 miles for tomorrow. I will commence at 9am. Since my mom is watching the kids! YEAH!

Does anyone else like packet pickup as much as I do?? Mine is Tuesday. I get a new shirt with a (hopefully) cool design. I get a number and some freebie snacks!

Goals for next week

Okay, I am 2 weeks out from my race. That gives me 1 week of good training left and it happens to fall on a week that my sister is getting married and my mom is coming to visit my house. Did I mention that my 3 year old is throwing up every hour? Good times.

Monday: 5.5 mile tempo run. Ab ripper with some pushups thrown in.
Tuesday: 75 minutes on the trainer.
Wednesday: 1 mile jog/walk, 1 mile FAST, 1 mile jog/walk. ab ripper and pushups
Thursday: 60 minutes on the trainer.
Friday: 8 mile run, ab ripper and pushups
Saturday: 32 mile ride with my mom and the plano cycling club (woohoo)

Also, no sweets until saturday. Got that? NO. SWEETS. And my son is having his 4 year old birthday party tuesday of which there will be cupcakes. And I won't eat any. I won't. (I hope)
