New Year Goals

Goals for 2011

Which I am attempting to keep realistic. I mean, I could make a goal to win Kona this year, but that just seems a little cocky. Even though I COULD, I don't want to hurt anyone's feelings, you know?

  • Run a mile in 7 minutes flat.
  • Run a 5K under 27:30 (8:50 pace)
  • Run a marathon under 4:30 (4:15 is better)
  • Get my biking speed to 17mph average
  • do a 100K bike ride
  • Shave 6 minutes off Blackland triathlon time (this is a lofty goal)
  • no sweets except for my one cheat day a week. After this holiday, I don't even WANT sweets.
  • wear a swimsuit with confidence - I want an awesome butt. Also a lofty goal after 3 kids and turning 30 this year!!
  • run 1000 miles. I'm not even sure if I can do this one. Hopefully the marathon training will help with this.
What are your goals? I'm already feeling optimistic after my 7 miler today at 9:40 pace INCLUDING the hills!! With my last mile at the fastest. go me!!

The numbers don't lie.

So my husband offers to run with me every now and then. and I hate it. He doesn't stay with me because my pace is pretty much walking for him. It's obvious that it pains him to go that slow. He is surprised that I don't run that fast since I am such a good swimmer and an okay cyclist (although not rocking on the speed there, either).  It makes me feel bad for not being better.

All I know is that when I run "fast", I feel like curling up in the fetal position and dying. My heartrate is sky high (although I didn't really know what it was, but I knew how I felt). It hurts SO BAD. I feel as though my arteries are going to burst open and spew blood all over from my heart beating so hard.

The facts are this:
220 minus your age = your maximum heart rate. The number you shouldn't go over. I am 29. SO my max heart rate would be 191.

You are supposed to hang out in the 65% to 85% of the max. SO, I should hang around in the 124-162 heart rate range.

Today while I ran my 1 mile in 7:50, my heart rate hit 193. That is OVER what my max is supposed to be. No wonder I feel like I'm going to die. You know what's sad? 7:50 isn't fast!!! How in the world am I supposed to be able to run faster if my heart is going to explode out of my chest??

Even when I slowed back down to 9:22/mi, I couldn't get under 184.

On a side note, I feel pretty comfortable with the heart rate at 175.

Since I'm only running every other day right now, I couldn't run until today to test it out. 

(might I mention that it's really hard to run under a freezing temperature because it hurts to breathe and the muscles don't ever warm up. So I felt slow and super tired today.

Let it snow, let it snow, let it...rain??

Today I had a 6 mile run on tap (key workout). And it was raining. and was 36 degrees. I really think snow would have been better. Oh, did I mention the 16 mph winds from the north?

This pic does not do justice to how soaked I was. (I already took off the soaking wet wind pants at mile 4) (and jeez my thighs look huge there)

Notice the droplets of water on my shoulder? And my beanie was soaking wet as well.

Snot on my sleeve.

Me feet stayed completely dry until I accidentally stepped in a huge puddle at mile 4 and splashed just above freezing water into my shoes. Dang it.

Refuel with 2 eggs on whole wheat toast and an apple.

Anyone else that runs have a LOW blood pressure and is ALWAYS dizzy when they stand up? Just me??

It's HERE!!!

My grandma send me some $$ for christmas and my mother in law gave me some $$ for my birthday, so I purchased some running skirts!! The good news? They were on super duper clearance.

This is what I'm wearing for my 10K in January (unless the weather is lower than 40 degrees).

2010 recap

January- Hip injury after my first ever 5 mile run(which took an hour). Can't walk without pain.

No workouts AT ALL for 2 months

March - 1 workout video a day. about 30 minutes each.

April 10th - start with 2 mile runs/jogs about 3x a week. It really is hard again.

May - sign up for a triathlon and pull out my bike for the first time in a year and a half. ride 7 miles the first day and feel like I want to die. Swim 500 yards and it hurts (haven't swam laps in like, 5 years).

June - first triathlon. OUCH. walked almost the entire 3.5 mile trail run since I was so wiped. slept for 3 hours that afternoon. Determined to do another and do better.

September - second triathlon, 10 minute PR and felt awesome! 3rd 5K ever with a PR of 28:42.

October - 5K PR of 28:02

November - 1st half marathon @ 2:11:08, got a trainer for my bike so I can work on endurance and speed for 2011 season. Knee injury.

December - training for January 10K, and feeling good. being careful with the knee. 25 mile bike rides feel great.

Can't wait for 2011!!

She shoots, she SCORES!

For the first time in WEEKS, I am 6 for 6 in my workouts this last week!! woohoooooo!

That's right! No puking, injuries, kiddie issues and I got in my workouts every day.

Here's hoping that I can accomplish it again this next week - only 4 weeks left until my race.

Do you think my family would be mad at me if I worked out on Christmas day?? Hmmm...

Here's next weeks plan.

Monday: 4 mile tempo run, ab ripper X with pushups and dips.

Tuesday: 25-ish mile bike (run 1 mile barefoot??)

Wednesday: 1 mile warm up, 6x400's (under 2:00 each), 1 mile cool down, abs, yoga?

Thursday: 25 mile bike (run 1 mile barefoot?)

Friday: 6 mile run, ab ripper, pushups and dips.

Sat/Christmas Day: bike? nothing? don't know yet.

About the push-ups and dips that I've been doing, the hubby NOTICED my arms last night!! He commented that I was getting some muscle! YAY!

Also, can't wait to show you the outfit I'm planning on wearing! Although, it won't be as cool as a RUN EMZ shirt, am I right?? :)

Five hundred twenty five thousand six hundred minutes.

To my vast audience of 4 readers (hi, guys!), I want to talk about my run this morning. Was it any more spectacular than any of the runs I've done in the last 2 months? Not especially.


One year ago I ran my second 5K ever. I remember it so well because I wanted to break 30 minutes really bad and I didn't. I came in at 30:20, and wanted to die. Like, D.I.E. I remember wanting to walk SO bad. Not being able to breathe. I almost fell over when I crossed the finish line because i was about to pass out.

Today I have successfully completed (and came in 4th) in 2 sprint triathlons, done 2 more 5K's (28:02), and a half marathon. This morning I ran 5 miles in 51 minutes (which is a hair slow for me) and felt great. GREAT. I have a cold right now and it's freezing outside, but it was a great run. A year ago I never would have imagined that I could run 5 miles OR that it would feel good.

I've come a long way in my first year of running and am looking forward to next December seeing 9 minute miles as "easy" and "feeling good".

Have I mentioned that I don't hate running anymore?? It's a strange feeling.

Marathon is how long?

I can't get this out of my head.

I called my 2 sisters today to invite them to run the marathon with my dad and me. You know, a family affair - if you will.

One of them is iffy because she's having a baby at the end of June and doesn't think she'll have enough time to train - I get that.

The other was a runner back in the day. Ran the mile in 6:50. Ran 5K's for cross country in early high school. Since then not a lot of the working out. She is now 21 (I think? Hey, the more kids, the lower number of brain cells) She has not worked out for at least 5 years. At all. I told her I was planning on a nice 10 min/mile pace (which she shrugged off as a piece of cake) and just to enjoy the marathon. She then asked me how long THIS marathon was.  Is this normal? People who "should" be runners don't know how long a marathon is??

Neither one will probably do it. Preggy girl, obviously. And the "quitter" sister. I don't mean to be mean (really) but if it's hard, she doesn't finish it. That's the way she is and has been for the last 7 years that I remember.

You guys know anyone who thinks because they were fast for a short period of time about 7 years ago that they can do whatever you do? Does it bug you at all?

2011 Race Season

So I'm checking out the calendar and deciding on some races for 2011. I have 2 Biggies that I want to do well in. #1 is The MARATHON...

Dum. Da da dum duuuummmmmm....

My dad said he would travel here and run it with me at my pace! Decided on the White Rock Marathon since it's a huge race and close to me.

#2 Biggie is a repeat of the Blackland Triathlon that I did this year. I want a PR on that course. Goal is to shave off 6 minutes to go under 1:30. I think it's possible since my running is better so I can take off 2 minutes there,(MAYBE I could get even faster and take off more time?? I certainly have room for improvement) and I could take another 3:30 off the bike and another :30 off the swim. I'm jumping in earlier this time so I don't get stuck behind anyone in the pool. Dang slow swimmers. That would put me in about 7th place since I go up an age group in triathlons this year. A harder age group. dang.

January 15 - Hot Chocolate 10K  (goal: 58 minute range. judging by last year's results, if I go faster than 58:42, I'll get 3rd place!!!! 9:20/mile hopefully)

March 26 - 10K Run for Cover (first year for the 10K, I would have placed 2nd for the 5K. Goal - PR from the one in January)

May 7 - Little Big Town 5K (this is a tiny race, I'll most likely place at this one without trying Goal: 27 minute range)

One of the following
June 11 - Metroplex sprint tri
June 18 - Mansfield sprint tri (new race)

August 6 - Mckinney Historical Run 5K (no way I'd place at this one, it's just close to me) Maybe not, I don't know about this one yet

September 5 - Blackland Triathlon (goal - under 1:30)
September 17- SEF 15K (I'll place by default)

October 30 - Boo Run Half marathon (place by default) Maybe I'll do this one

November - Fall out Cooper clinic Sprint Tri. This is also a maybe.

December - Run the Rock MARATHON!!!! say WHAT??
Frosty 5K??

That's at least 5 running races and 2 triathlons planned for now. The hubs and I decided that the Olympic and Half Iron triathlons will have to be pushed back to next year since I still have little kids at home and I don't want to be gone that much.

I'm getting excited. Now all I need is santa to bring me a garmin so I can work on speedwork and getting faster actually KNOWING what pace I'm running at.

Eat your yellow

Does anyone else have a veggie that they could eat every day all day? (To my lone 3 followers)

This would be mine...

Oh yeah, yellow summer squash. YUM! I never get sick of this stuff.

I'm excited to do some more running this week and to not puke anymore. Here's the game plan:

Monday: 4 mile w/ four 3 minute pick ups in the middle. abs, push ups and dips.
Tuesday: trainer for 75 minutes, stretch
Wednesday: 1 mile walk/jog; 1 mile as fast as I can (I'll time it, hopefully 8 minute range)), 1 mile jog cool down. Abs, push ups, dips
Thursday: 45 minute easy trainer, stretch (explanation: I find that by Thursday I am hosed on the workouts. So I decided i would make it an active recovery day for now and see how it feels)
Friday: 5 mile long run, abs, body sculpting
Saturday: Bike to high school (6.8 miles including pecan grove hill. yikes.) run 4x400's AFAIC (as fast as I can) goal to hit 1:30 or as close as possible. bike home (another 6.8 miles DOWN the hill)

Prophylactics for the retinas

Workout today: 17 miles biked, 2 miles ran, 1 hour weights

You know how rich it makes me feel to wear $60 sunglasses. I'm used to the $5 walmart ones being a step up from the dollar store ones we (hubs and I) always wear. They have interchangeable lenses and are SO light, I don't even feel like I'm wearing anything!

my tushy is happy

About a month ago I entered a contest that Steve in a Speedo hosted on his blog. and I WON!!

Well, I just got my prizes right before my 24 hour puke fest and so I FINALLY got to try out my new shorts!! My first pair of biking shorts that are not hand me downs from my mom and over 10 years old!! woohoo!

1 hour and 10 minutes on the trainer = happiness. What am I going to do when The Biggest Loser is over?? What will I watch while I cycle??

Feeling good today. Everyone should exercise for the clarity of mind it can give you. It's amazing how it wipes away all the brain foggies that I get.

I didn't work out at all yesterday.

Because I puked all day.

Yesterday ranks up there with one of the worst days of my life.

Fortunately, I woke up at 5am this morning FINALLY feeling better. I ate 2 pieces of toast and some water this morning and don't feel like retching it back up yet, so things are looking good.

I'm hoping I feel good enough this afternoon to pull the trainer out today and bust out an hour while watching House.

All while keeping my fingers crossed that I win THIS GIVEAWAY from Beth at SUAR.

I mean, who doesn't need gingerbread Gu right after puking her guts out for 24 hours??

Have you ever felt your calves so sore that it feels like knives are stabbing in them??

Because that's how I felt this morning.

I limped my way through a 3.5 mile run. My lungs and heart felt great. Mentally i was rearing to go! But my legs were not having any of it. My hip flexor is still a little sore and tight but I could have worked through that. My calves!! I've been an athlete for a long time and I've never felt anything like this before.

Has anyone else who's ever started running barefoot felt this way?? I hate it.

I actually had to stop and try to stretch them out but it didn't really work.

Hoping wednesday run goes way better because I can't handle this!

Change is good.

It's been 2 weeks. of no running. (although I have cheated a little)

I'm hoping against hope that my hip flexor is okay and that my knees hang in there!

Monday: 3.5 mile run WITH shoes. YAY! It's test day for running!! Also P90X ab ripper and biggest loser sculpting for awesome cuts. (that would be muscle cuts, by the by.) Now if I could only cut OUT the cookies, the cuts would be easier to see. Hmmmm...

Tuesday: 1hr 15 min. on the trainer. 1/2 mile barefoot??

Wednesday: 3.8 miles with shoes. ab ripper and body sculpting.

Thursday: 75 minutes on the trainer, nice stretching. 1/2 mile barefoot?

Friday: 4 mile run with shoes. abs and strength.

Saturday: 30 mile bike (hopefully NO wind!!!)

Fingers are crossed that I actually get in all the workouts this week since for the last 2 weeks I've had to take random rest days.

I am so excited to start running again. I can't believe I am actually typing this right now. In one year I've gone from wanting to puke my guts out in a 2 mile run and hating it to being excited to run 4 miles!! woohoo!

2 hour Biggest Loser can be cut down to 1 hour 4 minutes.

My son enjoys taking pictures of me while I moan and sweat.

Back in the day when my first born was NOT born and when she was a baby, I taught spinning classes 5 days a week. I loved those days. They called me the spinning Nazi and there would always be a line for my class. We would need to turn people away because there were too many people who wanted to take the class and not enough bikes. and the largest place had 27 bikes and it was still not enough. 

I kept a spiral notebook with the label "SPINNING" in sharpie marker on the front where I wrote all my workouts. (inventive, right?) I pulled it out yesterday in hopes that maybe I would follow one of the workouts while I biked on the trainer for the 3rd day in a row. 


Those workouts are INSANE! I used to do those?? I used to do those while smiling and talking everyone's ear off? I am sick.

Example: 30 seconds standing climb/30 second seated sprint ten times.

Where was the rest??

That's 10 minutes of pure agony!

Did I mention that I want to start teaching again?
